BYZANTINE HISTORY

THE BIRTH OF THE MIDDLE AGES, 395-814

BY H. L. B. Moss

Steven Runciman

BYZANTINE CIVILISATION

Sir Steven Runciman gives a general picture of the Orientalised Graeco-Roman civilisation which represented the last phase of the Roman Empire and had its capital at Constantinople. An historical outline of the chief events in the long period from 300 to 1453 (when Constantinople was taken by the Turks) serves as a framework for the following chapters, in which the author describes, with picturesque detail, various institutions and aspects of life in the Byzantine world.

A HISTORY OF THE CRUSADES. VOLUME III : THE KINGDOM OF ACRE AND THE LATER CRUSADES

Whether we regard the Crusades as the most romantic of Christian adventures, or as the last of the barbarian invasions, they form a central fact in medieval history. Before their inception the centre of our civilization was placed in Byzantium and in the lands of the Arab caliphate. Before they faded out the hegemony in civilization had passed to Western Europe. Out of this transformadon Modem History was born. In chronicling this transformadon Sir Steven Runciman has written a book which, from beginning to end, enthrals the layman as completely as it satisfies the historian. The excitement of battle, the horror of senseless massacre, the interplay of personalities and ambitions, the effect on the whole development of European history - these are his themes. As he rightly states, ‘The whole tale is one of faith and folly, courage and greed, hope and disillusion. This final volume describes the revival, through the Third Crusade, of the Frankish Kingdom of Jerusalem, its final fall a century later, and the accompanying degeneration of Crusading ideals to the level of the notorious crusade against Christian Byzantium.
